The Walled Garden, Upton Country Park

5th February 2012

Latest:

Work is well underway on this project.  Drainage is successfully installed and working, allowing progress to continue despite recent rainfall which would have previously made the garden too wet to drive over in places.

A specialist machine was brought in to dig narrow trenches that creates less disturbance (photo right) and provides a neater finish.

Infrastructure for events is being installed, with cables for electricity points, mains water supply for events and grey-water irrigation for the planting.

A route for the footpaths is being dug out and the enlarged planting beds created.

Work to the Tea Rooms will start on the 20th February with the removal of the existing door to the garden and other internal works. The Tea Rooms are likely to be closed for 2 days whilst noisy work is undertaken to the exterior wall - dates to be confirmed.

The Tea Rooms and Art Gallery shall remain open throughout the works.

A project overview, 2nd February 2012

Landscape & Infrastructure Improvements

This winter Leisure Services are re-landscaping the Walled Garden at Upton Country Park.

The aims of the project are to allow the garden to be used all year round, utilise the space for a range of different events and improve access to the Tea Rooms.

The plans can be viewed here and include the following features:

  • Improved access to / from the Tea Rooms by opening up and widening the existing doorway (see image, right)

  • Replacement single window above the doorway

  • Construction of a patio in front of the new doorway using clay brick pavers and low walls, with two steps and wheelchair access ramp to the side

  • Construction of a footpath around the garden to include brick edging and seating bays

  • Installation of a water feature - automated or self-activated fountains that can be shut off to create a flat (dry) area when necessary for events

  • Creation of new pedestrian entrances using Purbeck stone setts

  • Creation of a new vehicle entrance from Cooper's Yard

  • Refurbishment of the turreted seating areas - false ceilings to be removed and repairs carried out to the structure and roof tiles

  • Planting of four new corner beds for planting, with wider beds around the footpaths

  • Improvements to infrastructure, including electricity points, water stand pipes for events & irrigation and new drainage

Anticipated completion date is 1st May 2012.
