25th February 2011
Leisure Services received some funding through the Interim Heathland Mitigation Fund to provide BMX dirt ramps on the open space at Sherborn Crescent, Canford Heath.
They were built a short distance from the youth shelter and existing skate ramps - see image right.
Those that were interested in this project directly affected how and where the ramps were built, which will hopefully create ownership by local young people and ensure they are well used in to the future.
Leisure Services staff worked with Youth Services and the Safer Neighbourhood Team, and consulted with students from Longspee and Ashdown schools. Local young people were also invited along to help design the ramps on the day they were created (23rd February).
The ramps were moulded out of screened top soil with sections of metal ‘Kee-Klamp’ fencing used to delineate the area and hopefully prevent the spread of ramps further out across the field. Short sections of tree planting may also be undertaken to help screen the area.
Unfortunately Heathland Mitigation Funding cannot be used to enhance the existing metal skate equipment or provide additional youth shelters, as has been previously requested, as these facilities do not relieve pressure from our heathlands and as a result fail to meet funding priorities.
