Poole Park Cricket Pavilion Refurbishment

9th February 2012

Latest:

The Contract is out to Tender for this project. Once a Contractor is appointed a full timescale of work will be published here.

Leisure Services propose to undertake an improvement project for Poole Park Pavilion:

  • to provide modern user facilities whilst conserving and, where appropriate, re-creating certain elements of the original building to enhance its status as Poole’s only Victorian Pavilion

Background

The Cricket Pavilion is Locally Listed as defined in the Local Plan; it lies within the Poole Park Conservation Area and is situated within a Park of Grade II status on English Heritage list of Parks & Gardens of National Importance.

The rear extension is of 1930’s origin and is typical of the era, being of unassuming simplistic design and housing public conveniences which were closed of the public some years ago; since then a large portion of the building has become surplus to requirements.

The area to both sides of the Pavilion was fenced in with a low picket fence at the time that the public conveniences were closed, principally to prevent youths loitering and kicking footballs against the building, all of which has led to significant damage to the building and to the roof tiling in particular. The fencing was originally intended as a temporary measure ahead of any future scheme to upgrade the building.

Current use of the Pavilion

Poole Town Cricket Club uses the Pavilion; the club confirms that the basic requirement for playing accommodation for cricket at the level played by the club is to have:

  • separate changing rooms for the 'home' and 'away' teams;

  • both changing rooms to have access to showers - preferably integral to the changing room;

  • a separate changing room independent of the other two for the umpire, ideally with a shower

  • a kitchen area from which to serve tea, with some storage

  • a function room (the main room)

  • storage area for cricket equipment

Through the winter months it is primarily Poole Wheelers Cycling Club that use the Pavilion, with over 30 riders attending most evenings.  The cycle track is suitable for training and learning, but not for racing or trials which would involve the installation of barriers and signage.

Cycling at Poole Park is likely to be furthered by activities arranged through the Dorset Cycling Development Group in association with local groups and clubs.

Also using the building:

  • General cricket bookings

  • Charities that use the cycle track for fundraising events

  • Toddler groups and Community groups

  • Civic and Borough of Poole income generation events

  • Concessionaires/user groups such as: inline skating, Trikking, handcycling.
