25th Febuary 2010

OFFICIAL OPENING arranged for Friday, 16th April - all welcome!

Please note: The access gate between the Oakdale Centre Car Park and the open space is currently locked. This decision has been taken on health and safety grounds; contractors are working with heavy plant and machinery in this area and there are significant trip hazards as the footpath and entrances are constructed. The fenced 'safe zone' in the centre of the park is still open to public use, with access available via the entrances near the flats on Darby's Lane and Wimborne Road. As work progresses the public entrances into the park will alternate to allow the construction of the new paved areas and adjoining footpaths. |
Contractors, C J Lee & Sons, have cleared the old hedges and fences in preparation for the installation of new railings and new hedge planting.
Work continues on the new entrance from Darby's Lane, which is edged and stoned up and the northern section of footpath is being prepared for surfacing.
A large section of the field has been fenced off with chestnut paling to provide a safe zone for the public to use. PLEASE TAKE CARE - large plant and machinery is in use on site - caution is needed at all times, especially when entering or exiting the park.
The area closest the Oakdale Community Partnership Centre is being prepared for the installation of new play equipment as part of the Playbuilder programme.

Work started on the new play area 1st February.
As works progress different areas of the park may be opened up to maximise available space for the public to use. Every effort will be made to keep the area clear of any debris.
The works
Perimeter fencing and hedges have been removed, to be replaced with new fencing that will reflect the style of the new entrances. A mixture of hedges and clusters of native tree planting that will add all year round colour and wildlife interest.
Four new entrances will welcome visitors and provide a safe and attractive route into the space, while new railings will bound the park (see above right for detail).
Two hard-surfaced paths will lead from these entrances, oriented east-west that will cross the park allowing better links between Darby’s Lane and the shops and bus stop in Wimborne Road.
An avenue of trees will be planted along the eastern (Darby’s Lane) side of the park to provide a point of interest, shade and allow some significant trees to develop in the park.
The existing Rebound Wall is also due to be removed and replaced with a new 'Mini-Court' (picture right) that allows end-to-end games of five-a-side football.
