Update Regrettably, despite regular watering throughout the hot dry spell, some of the trees and hedging planted in March have died off and others are struggling. The watering regime has been increased, including use of the Borough's in-house tanker that was purchased to combat heathland fires (photo right). It is possible that some of the dried out trees will re-bud with sufficient watering and a judgement will be made at the end of the summer as to those that need replacing this winter. These replacements are allowed in the contract with Wreford's of Southampton, who supplied and planted the trees. In the autumn the bare areas of grass will be re-turfed; the new turf we laid earlier in the year failed to survive the very dry start to the year. These measures should complete work on this project. |

OFFICIALLY OPENED by the Mayor of Poole, Councillor Charles Meachin, on Friday 16th April 2010
16th April, the Mayor officially opens the new park & play area
The new play area and landscaping at Oakdale Community Park is almost complete, with new bespoke safety barriers the last major feature to be installed. Other than some final turfing and other minor items such as a notice board, all major aspects of the project have now been completed.
The barriers (see photos above right) are made of 6mm steel plate, laser cut to create the wonderful Oak tree shapes. Steel shapes that were cut out have been welded back on to give a 3-D profile and the whole structure was zinc plated and powder coated. Two different autumnal colours were applied and a polished stainless steel tube added around the edge for safety and a high-quality finish.
Barriers were needed to slow people down on their exit from the park and also help prevent footballs, children and dogs from running out on to the busy Wimborne Road.
On
21st April a
new mini ball court was installed on the tarmac pad close to
the play area.
New terracotta coloured resin-bonded footpaths lead from the four new entrances, block paved in an attractive radial design (see photo right).
Park railings have been installed and Wreford Ltd has completed a programme of extensive planting. 190m of beech hedging and 43 semi-mature trees (left) have been planted, instantly adding height, colour and interest to the space.
The
Oakdale
Residents Community Association (ORCA) made a generous
donation towards the purchase of two large, approx 1.8m (6’) high Purbeck
stone monoliths. They
have been drilled with holes to provide a focal
point at the end of an avenue of Maple trees and diagonally
across the park at the Wimborne Road (north) entrance. The
monoliths are etched with the ORCA logo.
New play area
A range of new play equipment has been installed in the area closest the Oakdale Community Partnership Centre as part of the Playbuilder programme. It opened for use on 1st April, just in time for the school Easter holidays.
