Funding has now been allocated to this
project from
Planning Obligations
(developer contributions) for Parkstone.
The final details of the lease are being
agreed with the College and work should
start early in 2012 to engage the public
and residents and make various
improvements, as detailed below.
|
The unused playing field on North
Road, Parkstone is currently owned by Bournemouth & Poole College,
and the Council are negotiating to lease the land in order that it can be
used as public open space.
The approx 1.1
hectare (2.9 acre) site is heavily screened by mature trees to
the northern and eastern boundaries; to the west and south are
residential properties. There is currently no formal
public access to the space, and no facilities.
Using £60,000 from
the Planning Obligations
fund for Parkstone ward, we propose to undertake work to make
the site safe, and carry out tree and woodland management and
habitat improvements to prepare the site for public use.
The field will
become the end piece of a strategic green corridor of woodland
and open space that runs from Parkstone Heights and through
Constitution Hill Viewpoint (see the aerial view, above right).
Enhancing these connections would be invaluable and other
improvements through the linked open spaces (replacement steps
and new signage, for instance) will also be undertaken using
Planning Obligations funding.
Improvements to the North Road Playing Field site will include:
-
the
creation of public access points
-
installation of bins, benches and a noticeboard
-
safety work - the re-profiling of ditches, removal of
dangerous sections of fencing, tree work, etc.
-
the
creation of new ponds and other wildlife habitat work
-
tree
planting and woodland management
Once the
improvements are completed the open space will be managed by
Poole's Greenspace Maintenance team through existing revenue
budgets.
The College have
stipulated that the site be named 'Bournemouth & Poole Community
College Garden'.
