Hamworthy Park Play Area

9th September 2009

1st July 2010: the Skysurf  has been damaged and is unusable.  We are arranging to get it repaired as soon as possible, but it's a specialist welding job and may take a while.

Officially opened 3rd August 2009 by the Mayor of Poole, Councillor Charles Meachin

The main play area (Phase 2) was open for use on 19th June 2009 and Area 2 "Challenger" for the over 12's - the Skysurf and climbing poles - was completed 23rd June.  The new rebound wall was then installed by Banyards Ltd of Wimborne, completed 21st July.

Challenge & Adventure

This has been a project to completely refurbish and extend the play facilities at Hamworthy Park for children and young people 9 yrs and older.

It was designed in conjunction with pupils from Carter Community College, Hamworthy Middle School and Turlin Moor Community School, and other park users.  The installation team started work on site on 18th May 2009.

There are two play spaces:

Area 1 (Adventure) within the fenced play area features an exciting range of equipment, much of it unique in Poole.  A new Hexagonal Swing caters for 6 users at any one time, and the ever popular Buddy Swing is also designed for shared use.  Top of young people's wish list was an Aerial Cableway, and one has been included in the design - the first in Poole.  An Ixo multi play unit, Rodeo Board, Aeroskate, Gyro Spiral and Double Perch and, in August, a surprise addition - using the balance of the budget contingency we bought & installed a Supernova in the space once taken by the old roundabout.

Area 2 (Challenger) is outside the fenced area and has been designed especially for a slightly older age group (12 years+) looking for that extra physical challenge.  It features the very exciting rotating Skysurf set in a safe 'fall zone' of sand, and two climbing poles.

In July a stile was installed (replacing a fence panel) giving quicker access between the two play areas.

The project

The play areas will be inspected on a daily basis by our Grounds Maintenance Contractors, Continental Landscapes - as are all play areas in Poole.

Official Opening, 3rd August

The rain stayed away, the park quickly filled with local people and visitors to the area, and the Mayor enjoyed the new play equipment as much as anyone!

Art in the Park

Hamworthy Park Fun Day, 14th August - fun day visitors were invited to put the finishing touches to the colourful and topical park art that now decorates the back wall of the Hamworthy Outdoor Education Centre.  Designed by local mural artist Nina Camplin (click on the thumbnail below for an enlarged image).
