Green Gyms for Green Spaces

Updated 16th June 2010

Poole Park 2010

Work has been completed on the installation of an exciting new selection of outdoor fitness equipment in Poole Park.

Surfacing has been laid at three of the four new pieces of equipment and the final area will be surfaced with gravel, and other compacted areas topped up, when the weather allows which is likely to be May/June at the earliest.

An updated activity route map is now displayed in the four park notice boards helping to direct users to the next cluster of equipment.  It is also available here to download and print your own copy (click on the image, right).  Otherwise, please email Martin Whitchurch with your name & address, and he will send you a hard copy.

Hags UK have supplied the new pieces.  The same company provided equipment for Phase 1 of the original 'Green Gym' concept last spring; the project was such a success that they offered us a one year trial period on these new additions to their 'Planet' range.

Originally the new equipment was to be sited in Baiter to provide a wider spread along the 5Km activity route.  However, owing to the outstanding Town & Village Green application that is not possible.  The equipment has therefore be sited in Poole Park to complement the existing range.

Over time we will appraise this and possibly relocate some of it to Baiter at a later date, if possible.

Poole Park - Baiter - Whitecliff, April 2009

A new outdoor fitness and activity route was opened in Poole in April 2009, designed to encourage exercise in an open, healthy environment.  Nine clusters of 'outdoor gym' equipment have been installed at:

  • six locations around the lake in Poole Park

  • close to the slipway car park at Baiter, and

  • near the car park and opposite the play area at Whitecliff.

New 2km and 5km routes have been developed through three open spaces with clusters of equipment installed in various locations.  Ranging from Tai-Chi spinners and rowing machines to sit ups and balancing bars, the installations are designed to attract all ages and abilities.

Bronze plaques have been set in the ground alongside equipment marking 400m distances along two routes, 2km around Poole Park boating Lake and 5km through Poole Park, Baiter and Whitecliff.   Information boards will also be installed at four locations.

The concept of an outdoor gym for Poole Park was developed with the Friends of Poole Park and the Green Gym Company, whose continued support over several years has helped define and deliver the end product.

The success of the new equipment was celebrated on Wednesday 22nd April at its official opening by the Mayor of Poole, Cllr Joyce Lavender.  The Mayor, Martin Whitchurch, local athletes and residents demonstrated the equipment [pictures].
