Findings from the play area visit

Monday 8th June 2009, 3:30pm – 5:30pm

6 boys aged 7-14yrs, 15 girls aged 7-15yrs

Several parks were mentioned as favourites including: Hamworthy Park (as there is lots to do, it is different and has a beach), Poole Park (lots of space, exercise things, lots of places to sit), Whitecliff (lots of fun stuff), one near Puddletown Crescent on Canford Heath (climbing frames and everything), Poultons Park (lots of slides and climbing frames – mostly wooden).

One person named Turlin Moor Pavilion as their favourite park. All but two mentioned Turlin Moor Pavilion as the park they visited most. Reasons given for using it were:

  • Its close to home
  • Lots of open space to play rugby and hang out with friends
  • Come with my sisters and family
  • Its quiet
  • Swings are clean here (not like the ones at Foreland Road)
  • Not loads of people
  • Can watch the boys playing football

Nearly everyone we spoke to wanted to keep the swings but said they needed painting and a few pointed out that they needed evening out.  The open space was the next most popular thing to keep followed by the bench and the climbing frame.

Additions to the park included:

Mentioned several times:

  • A really high slide (one that carries on for ages then stops and starts again). Or down the bank towards rugby pitches – perhaps double slides so we can race / twisty slide)
  • Comfy funky benches (with ashtrays near, under shelter with light and radio)
  • Zip wire
  • Basket Swings
  • Climbing frame (wooden with slide / like at Moors Valley / spider web)

Mentioned once or twice:

  • Just lots more stuff – including a roundabout
  • Monkey bars
  • Exercise equipment (but close together not too spread out)
  • Goal posts
  • Bouncy castle or trampoline
  • Spinning cup
  • More trees / little ones to climb
  • More paths to ride on
  • Little paddling pool
  • Fireman’s pole
  • Wooden houses with steps so you can climb on roof

Some expressed fears of new equipment being damaged and therefore it was felt that anything that went in should be sturdy.

Youth Centre consultation

A session was also run at the Yr 7 night at Turlin Moor Youth Centre on Tuesday 9th June. Comments were received about Foreland Road, Turlin Moor Pavilion and Dawkins Road Play Area.  9 females and 5 males aged 11-13 yrs participated.

Favourite parks included:

  • Poultons Park
  • Poole Park (big with loads to do)
  • Foreland Road (lots of stuff for younger ones so can take little brothers and sisters)
  • Dawkins Road

Parks visited the most were Foreland Road, Turlin Moor Pavilion, Dawkins Road and Hamworthy Park.

Suggestions for Turlin Moor Pavilion:

  • Zip wire
  • Water stuff
  • Really high climbing frame with ropes
  • Travelator (like in gladiators)
  • Cycle monkey bars
  • Challenging exercise stuff
  • Massive skate park
  • Graffiti wall so we can paint
  • See saw
