Be Involved

Listening to what you said...

Children aged 8-13 yrs, parents and carers, ward councillors, community & residents groups, Safer Neighbourhood Teams and our colleagues in the council - we sought a wide range of input into the design of play area improvements:

  • How would you like your play spaces to look?

  • What kind of play experience do you want at your play area?

  • What equipment should we replace and what changes are needed?

  • Are there specific local issues that need addressing?

It was vital to the success of each and every project that we involved as many local people as we could.

Year 2 play areas

Important funding news update 9th May 2011

A reduced grant of £365k has been received from central government.

Councillors have decided that rather than spending the funds on all 11 sites and achieving minor improvements, that Leisure Services should concentrate on improving 6 sites - Pergins Recreation Ground, Selkirk Close, Millfield, Charter Road, Parkway and Hatchards Field.

These six were selected from the original 11 projects by considering the numbers of children living within 400m of the sites, and choosing those that are likely to be used by the highest number of 8-13 year olds.

Year 2 - progress we had made:

  • Playbuilder leaflets were distributed to all properties within 200m of each Year 2 play area, and are available from all public libraries

  • In May the Playbuilder team engaged with local residents and users at nine of the eleven Year 2 play areas, and in June we returned to show the results of young people's consultation and to discuss final designs:

  • Site visits were carried out by Play Thinkers - three groups of eleven 8-13 year olds who assess Year 2 sites before they are improved; follow-up visits will be made after completion to re-assess and evaluate the work

  • Becky Lucas and her team from Poole's Children & Young People's Services did a fantastic job - presenting at school assemblies, holding lunchtime events and distributing questionnaires.  Eight schools are involved with Year 2 projects, attended by approximately 3,000 (or 33%) of Poole's 8-13 year olds:

Oakdale South Road Middle School St Joseph’s Combined School
Broadstone Middle School Branksome Heath Middle School

Haymoor Middle School

Bearwood Primary School

Hillbourne Combined School

Talbot Heath Combined School

  • Three play companies were engaged to deliver ‘design and build’ improvements at 4 sites - Selkirk Close, Halstock Crescent, Broadstone Recreation Ground and Millfield.  This method of delivering play uses the play companies, accompanied by the Playbuilder team, to consult in schools, prepare designs for feedback, finalise designs and carry out all the installation work.  Other play area improvements will be designed by the in-house team.
