Findings from the play area visit

Friday 5th June 2009, 3:30pm – 5:30pm

11 boys aged 8-12 yrs, 14 girls aged 8-11 yrs

Several of those who came to the park did so as a result of an announcement during school (Turlin Moor Community School) and several expressed an interest in joining a school focus group to develop the ideas generated by the initial consultation.

Foreland Road is the play area the majority of them visited most, followed by the play area at Turlin Moor Pavilion; both are in close proximity to their homes and school.

Several parks from round the country were named as favourite parks (one in Manchester, Wales, Windsor and another in Shaftesbury were mentioned).

Locally Hamworthy Park, Dawkins Rd (also known as Samson’s Park), Foreland Road, Poultons and Upton Park were named.

The young people feel that the play space should keep the swings and the equipment for younger ones (several take younger siblings there).  Opinion was split as to whether the yellow spinning cup, purple and green challenge trail and frog should be kept.

Most felt what is there already is OK but gets boring after about 5 minutes because it's not designed for them – they want to see new things that aren't in other parks. Concern was expressed about older teenagers ruining it and graffiti.

Requests for change include (numbers indicate when mentioned more than once):

  • A tyre swing (2)
  • A gate the other side is definitely needed
  • Roundabout (5)
  • Buddy swing (7)
  • Zip wire (8)
  • Taller apparatus
  • Slides (various suggestions)
  • Tunnels (2)
  • Monkey bars (3)
  • Gym equipment for all to use (4)
  • More seating / funky benches / shelters 930
  • Mix of wood and metal
  • Bike jumps (4) – comment made about these needing to be far enough away from play equipment
  • Motorbike area
  • Free running equipment
  • Bouncing, swinging, turning seesaw
  • Big climbing frame (4)
  • Climbing wall
  • Electric swing
  • Trampoline
  • Swings that a lot of people can use

In relation to incorporating playthings on to the mound concern was expressed that parents might worry more as i is hidden from site, so perhaps the field would be a better location. Although one large slide from the top of the mound to the bottom was a popular suggestion.

Youth Centre consultation

A session was also run at the Yr 7 night at Turlin Moor Youth Centre on Tuesday 9th June. Comments were received about Foreland Road, Turlin Moor Pavilion and Dawkins Road Play Area.  9 females and 5 males aged 11-13 yrs participated.

Favourite parks included:

  • Poultons Park
  • Poole Park (big with loads to do)
  • Foreland Road (lots of stuff for younger ones so can take little brothers and sisters)
  • Dawkins Road

Parks visited the most were Foreland Road, Turlin Moor Pavilion, Dawkins Road and Hamworthy Park.

Suggestions for Foreland Road:

  • Tyre Swing (make better with wooden bits and chains)
  • Graffiti wall so teenagers can paint
  • Fix spinning yellow chair
  • Add swings
  • Zip wire
  • Gym area
  • Big climbing like at Monkey world
  • Slide down bank
