Alexandra Park Play Area

Alexandra Road, Lower Parkstone, Poole

Final decision making

9th March 2010: Borough of Poole is going ahead with modified plans to invest £60,000 in providing new children's play equipment for the park in Alexandra Road following a widespread consultation with local residents, schools, parents and children.

The council has decided to revise some aspects of the original proposals after listening to the views of local residents.

The new play equipment will include a 3.9 metre timber tower with zip wire; a buddy swing, ideal for individuals, groups and disabled users; and a rebound wall.

Following a public meeting on Friday, 5 March 2010, the council has agreed changes to the location of the zip wire and orientation of the rebound wall to minimise potential disruption to local residents. The council will also monitor the use of the equipment throughout the summer to assess if any subsequent changes to the layout of the play area are required.

Cllr Tony Woodcock, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Children Services and Play Champion for Poole at that time, said: "Our aim has always been to create an exciting space that not only offers a stimulating play experience for children but also one that complements the park and its surroundings. We have consulted with the community at every stage of the project and listened to all views, including those of local children whose opinions are especially important with a project of this nature.

"We believe the vast majority of local people, both young and old, will agree that the proposals offer an opportunity to enhance Alexandra Park and deliver much-needed improvements to the play facilities available for the hundreds of children living nearby."

Work to install the play equipment will begin as soon as possible and it is hoped that the new play area will be ready to open in May 2010.

Meeting at the Bowls Club, Alexandra Park

Friday, 5th March (5:30 - 7:00pm)

Leisure Services held an early evening meeting at Alexandra Park Bowls Club to provide an additional opportunity for residents to express their views to Councillors and officers.

Approximately 60 residents attended; it was agreed that play improvements were required and that the funding opportunity should not be wasted.  What couldn't be agreed was the extent of those improvements; in particular the need for/positioning of the rebound wall.

Councillors and officers met early on Monday morning, 8th March, to make a final decision on the project in order that a start can be made on site to meet the funding deadline (end March).  Their decision was assisted by the 75 emails of support received from local residents over the weekend of 6th-7th March.
